Tips For Shopping For The Right Wheels And Tires For Your Vehicle

Choosing the right set of wheels and tires is more than just making your vehicle look cool. More importantly, they help in improving the performance of your vehicle. And although you might not appreciate that fact during your normal everyday driving, you will when you drive your car out in extreme conditions. This article will help you decide on which wheels and tires to choose for your particular driving condition. Again, it’s all about helping your vehicle achieve its maximum performance. So read on and be informed!1. If you wish to replace your vehicle’s set of wheels, you have two options. One, there’s the trusty old steel wheels and then there’s the alloy wheels. Steel wheels are the cheaper because they are easier manufactured than alloy wheels. But the heftier price tag of alloy wheels is due to the fact that they help your car perform better since they are lighter and far stronger than steel ones.2. Another thing you should consider when buying a set of wheels is the size. Most cars come in with 15″ wheels. It is your choice, however, if you wish to stick with it or go for larger ones like 16″ and 17″ wheels.Larger wheels are preferred by aftermarket parts enthusiasts because they look better. But more than that, larger wheels provide more traction to your vehicle when cornering. The downside, however, is that larger wheels can be easily damaged in rough roads compared to smaller ones.3. As for the tires, the size of your tire will depend of course on the size of your wheel. But more than the issue of size, there are other things that you need to consider when buying a tire for your vehicle. At the top of the list of your consideration should be on what kind of condition you are planning to drive your vehicle. There are wheels that are designed for particular weather conditions like winter and those in heavy rain. It would help if you know the typical weather conditions in your area so that it will be easier to find the right set of tires for your particular needs.4. Tire manufacturers would advice you to rotate your tires every so often so that your tires will wear out evenly. Somewhere between 3,000 to 5,000 miles would be a good distance travelled before you rotate your tires. For vehicles with tires that all have the same size, there’s what’s called four-wheel and five-wheel rotation patterns, wherein the latter also includes the spare tire in the rotation. Evenly-worn tires help your vehicle’s performance a lot especially in terms of traction. All in all, it’s more than just the looks you need to consider when it comes to buying the right wheels and tires for your vehicle. Keep in mind that getting the right wheels is all about improving your vehicle’s performance.

Maintain Your Auto’s Cooling System For Your Upcoming Summer Vacation And Roadtrips

The purpose of a car’s cooling system is not only to remove excess heat. It is to keep the temperature of the car engine in tip top shape at that temperature to prevent excess damage and wear to your automotive engine and its components. Why chance excess wear and tear as well as expensive repairs to your motor vehicle – whether it is S.U.V., car, truck or van?

Rust will fill and clog the passages of your radiator over time. Why chance expensive engine damage? Why take the chance of ruining an otherwise good vacation or trip due to little more than heat damage to your engine. Damage to your engine from excess heat is created over time. By simple routine radiator and cooling system maintained you can prevent much of these troubles, cares and concerns. Preventive maintenance is how airplanes are cared for. Why not treat your car of SUV in this same manner? It all comes down to a regular maintenance and inspections schedule.

Rust may clog the passageways of your car or SUV’s radiator. Hard water deposits a scale much like the mineral scales that clog your coffeemaker, humidifier or kettle at the lake cottage. These mineral scale deposits reduce heat transfer in your radiator. Simply put your radiator will not be able to cool your car engine. Your car or SUV will overheat. Your car engine, trip vacation at least your day will be inconvenienced and perhaps ruined. Even more if two different metals touch inside your radiator system them electrolytic corrosion can and will occur. Further trouble and radiator damage is possible. If conditions are ideal or more than ideal for rust to form – rust is guaranteed to form and deposit in the waterways of your vital radiator. Rust makes up about 90 % of all solids that can choke up the water flowing areas if your radiator- including the water storage “water jacket” areas.Scale is a deposit of the solids left by the evaporation of the water and radiator antifreeze. These scales that are formed and deposited in your radiator and cooling system are very similar to the scale that forms inside a teakettle or coffeemaker after the boiling of hard water. What the solids are composed of depends upon the nature of the water itself but they most commonly include calcium carbonate, calcium sulphate and magnesium oxides.Electrolytic corrosion can result from soldered seams in older style copper radiator, copper gaskets in contact with other metals, brazed joints in steel tubes and imperfect plaiting on steel or other metal parts. An electrolytic current is set up and the metal most active electro chemically slowly dissolves. What can you do to prevent all this damage to your radiator and the grief and costs involved? As always the key words are prevention, prevention and prevention. An ounce of prevention is worth kilograms of cure.Radiator saboteurs can be averted by radiator cleaners and inhibitors used properly. You will prevent most of your troubles in your car of SUV’s vital and expensive to repair cooling systems.Fall and spring cleaning of a cooling system should always include- clearing out rust and scale with a chemical cleaner. It never hurts as well to have a competent auto repair shop conduct a thorough flush of your radiator. Basically your car’s radiator is flushed “backwards” with a strong flow of coolant to remove heavily trapped sediment and that horrible scaling. Lastly and in addition during these cleaning and preventative maintenance procedures you should insist that a radiator rust inhibitor be added to your radiator coolant. A Radiator Rust Inhibitor is a blend of rust inhibitors, lubricants and biocides that restores rust- and oxidation-inhibiting properties to coolant, promoting cooling system life. Furthermore, it provides lubricant to coolant that reduces and eliminates water pump noise. After all why cause yourself needless aggravation and car maintenance costs by not applying maintenance and inspection schedule to your vehicle’s cooling system. Your summer vacation and summer road trips will soon be here. Why not make your summer vacations road trips trouble free?

Every Good Car Owner Should Check Their Car Periodically To Make Sure It Is Running Properly

Though there are lights on the dashboard to indicate any problems, it is much better to know a little bit about your car, and to keep an eye on the important fluids that are used to run the car. Everyone knows about putting enough gas in the car, but there are some simple steps that should be done about once a week. This is a very good thing to teach any teenager or other new car owner, especially one whose new car is over five years old.First of all, make a habit of checking your fluids. The older the car the more frequent the checks should be, but at least make them once every two weeks. Having a regular schedule will help in this, for example, the first and fifteenth of every month. In this way, you will have to remember if you have just forgotten to make the check or if you have just done it. Today let’s cover checking the oil.The oil level is one of the most important fluids to check regularly. There is a long thin metal piece, call the dipstick, that slides into a compartment adjacent to the engine. Most dipsticks ended in a small circular, plastic coated ring that you can use to pull it out of its tube. Make sure you see the small hole the dipstick goes into so that you can replace it there to check the oil level. First, make sure the car is parked on a level surface and has been sitting for several hours before checking the oil. This is because the oil is used to lubricate the engine, and takes a while to settle down back into the bottom of the engine. Remove the dipstick, and wipe any existing oil off it using an old rag. Reinsert the dipstick back into its small hole, all the way down so the top of the dipstick is in its normal position. Pull it out once again and notice the light or dark brown liquid that coats the bottom part of the stick. You will notice that there will be markings on the dipstick, indicating low and full levels for the oil. Depending on your car they may have the words “full” and “add”, or possibly just two notches or other notation. Generally the fluid should be somewhere near, or possibly slightly over, the full line on the dipstick (the one higher up on the stick). If not, oil should be added to the car. For most cars, the amount of oil between the bottom mark and the full mark is one quart of oil. So, for example, if you are oil comes half way between the bottom and top marks, then you should add approximately one half quart of oil. Add that much oil, wait for a few moments, and then measure it once again. If the oil level is significantly below the bottom mark, add as much as necessary to bring it up to the top mark, and then have a mechanic look at your car for oil leaks. In order to add oil to the car, there should be a small round cap that can be unscrewed, which hopefully has the word “oil” on it. If it is not clearly marked, ask a knowledgeable person where to add the oil in, for it is crucial to get the right opening. Simply unscrew the cap, add the oil (using an oil funnel if you wish to be neat), and then make sure you replace the cap securely.Other fluids to check weekly include coolant level, windshield washer fluid, power steering fluid (if applicable), and brake fluid. Also, make a periodic check of tire pressure. How to do these will be covered in other articles.

Without An Excellent Finish Your Vehicle Is No Different From The Rest

If there is a paradox that meanders through automobile vehicle owners – whether it is owners of cars, trucks or SUV’s is that most owners and purchasers tend to short change their vehicle’s finish and final shiny finish and presentation. This absurdity is usually two fold: either the enthusiast loses patience, is lazy or simply runs out of money. However according to automotive industry expert Riteway Strokon “Presentation and Appearance is Everything” “ Presentation, Presentation , Presentation“ is similar to the Real Estate Salesperson’s adage of “Location , Location , Location”..

What factors need to be considered in the choice of car body paint shop and technician specialists who will prepare and apply the finish to your vehicle – be it car, truck or S.U.V.? First of all a proper and a through job of preparation are essential. Once cannot skimp on a foundation of a house and once cannot skimp on proper auto body paint preparation. A paint job is only as good as to what is underneath it. The auto body surface must be absolutely clean – first by a chemical stripper, next removing any rust apparent or not apparent on the car by either by chemical means or by sandblasting. Once those two are done the surface must be washed down with a metal conditioner to in effect etch the metal surface for better adhesion of the paint.

Next the surface of the vehicle is primed with a special “primer “coat of paint. The key thing to ask and look for at this stage of the process is whether the car with its coat of primer paint will be allowed to air dry and set for a number of days or whether the paint will be slapped on after only a cursory overnight time period of primer paint drying. After a thorough drying – this coat of primer paint will next be thoroughly and carefully sanded. Again attention to detail and patience are key. You can often judge these two traits in a shop and its staff by both their attention to cleanliness and order in their shop of tools and equipment, their general demeanor as well as references from previous customers.

Next in line is the actual painting process. Here again attention to detail is key. Not enough can be stressed on the importance of this stage in the vehicle painting process.

Lastly it comes to the post presentation finishing. Ask about this step. Some shops will consider the job “done” after the simple application of the surface paint.

Others will pay great attention to detail – inspecting and applying finishing touches- in effect making sure that everything and anything of the presentation and appearance of the car is in order. The vehicle so to speak should be in better than “new condition”. Ensure that body moldings as well as the rubber door seals are placed in properly – that is tight fitting without space so that the rubber doors seals seal fit intact and tightly without gaps. There should be no wind noises. Lastly ensure that no remnants of the finished paint job are apparent in small ways on your vehicle paint job.

All in all a more than excellent paint job more than adds great value and appreciation to your vehicle – whether it is Car, Truck or Sports Recreation Vehicle.

Timeless, This Is How Classic Cars Are Often Described

A car is considered classic if it achieves a collectible value. The most popular classic cars don’t have a particular genre. And there are many debates on how classic cars should be defined.Let’s take a look at the evolution of automobiles first and see what vehicles were like before the classic cars. The first on the list is the antique cars of the 1880-1916. It was previously called the horseless carriages. The first horseless carriage used steam. Nicholas-Joseph Cugnot was acknowledged for creating the first full scale steam vehicle. It can accommodate four passengers. Since then, the automobile has evolved in so many aspects like, designs, colors and power source. Much is credited for the early designs of these cars. It has paved way for the creation of many other classic cars.1916-1924 is the age for Vintage automobiles. This is the result of the horseless carriage evolution. Everything was better with the car in this era. From its machinery down to its comfort, it was more comfortable to drive and ride in. The designs were also more stylish and fashionable. There were innovations in terms of rolling windows and other car features. It was also the era where durability was given importance. More affordable automobiles were available too. It made traveling easier. It was the age of discovery and creativity. The classic cars came after the Vintage era. The term classic is often used to describe an older car. But many would contest. According to some, not all old cars can be considered classic. It has to exude elegance and sophistication before a car can be labeled as such. For some, before a car can be considered as classic, it has to be top ranked. It should represent quality and class. It should be brilliantly planned in terms of style and engineering. Some of the popular names of classic cars include the following:• Alfa Romeo, an Italian automobile manufacturer established in 1910.• Bayerische Motoren Werke AG known as the BMW. It is a German automobile manufacturer popular for coming up with top class luxury cars.• Jaguar Cars Limited. In 1922, it was founded as the Swallow Sidecar Company.• Mercedes Benz, also known for manufacturing high performance and luxury cars.• Rolls-Royce is another known brand of luxury cars. And;• Volvo, it is also a known maker of luxury cars owned by Ford Motors Company.Since classic cars are extremely valuable, utmost care should be given to it. Some simple tips of taking care a classic car includes taking care of the car’s paint. Its paint depicts the kind of owner it has. Since it is the exterior part of the vehicle, any irregularities on it will easily be noticed. To avoid repainting avoid scratching it, and learn to wash the car to maintain its beauty. Use the proper tools in washing the car. Use cotton or paint-safe washing mitt. Dry the car properly, this will prevent water spots.Your car will remain timeless if you know how to take care of it.

Selecting The Best Automotive Products

What with selection, car salesman, negotiation tactics, car finance or lease options as well as auto product finance rates either from the dealer or your local financial institution. On top of that most people only buy a new vehicle only when their current one breaks down or is costing them a fortune in repairs. As such they are in a rush in terms of selection for their purchase, their finances may be limited. As a result they are not in the best negotiating position to buy that newer vehicle from a seller – whether they are a retail car dealer or private auto seller. If you can prevent or at least prolong that hassle from occurring – why not make life easier for yourself.

Some people seem to have no trouble with their cars. Others seem to have a regular, almost predictable battle, with their cars breaking down and needing costly repairs. Why is this so? In some cases it may be plain luck. In other cases it may factors at the assembly line – it used to be that it was recommended not to purchase a car that was made on certain days, usually before or after a weekend or major holiday. As a car buyer it was recommended to inspect the sticker on the car door for date of manufacture. Lots of luck. However with quality levels being maintained in a more consistent manner now this does not seem to be such an issue.

The major and overriding reason that some people don’t have a string of car and car repair problems and others do comes down very simply in most cases to basic car maintenance. A car does not just run by itself forever. It needs routine maintenance.

It’s fairly simple. In most cases all you have to do is refer to your owner’s manual for maintained information specific to your car. If your glove box does not contain an owner or owner’s maintenance manual, this information can easily be located either online, or by contacting the car dealer or manufacturer. At the worst you can buy these manuals online on eBay in a cd disc format. Well worth the cost…

Routine automobile eminence includes - regular oil changes, checking your car tire pressures and tire tread wear. From time to time the tires should be rotated as well.

Fluid levels should be checked on an ongoing basis – this includes oil, transmission, power steering and brake fluids. Of course windshield washer fluid should be topped up for safety. Radiator coolant levels should be inspected as well. A professional can inspect your hoses, pipes and wiring for wear and tear which necessitates replacement.

Your battery and transmission should be inspected and tested on a regular basis – especially if you do winter driving. Finally the car depends on its transmission, which is often the most unappreciated mechanical component of the car. Have a specialized transmission shop inspect and test the transmission on its recommended basis.

In the end it’s all very simple. Car drivers who do not seem to have “car trouble” and a string of mechanical failures and expensive repairs are the ones who take the time to conduct routine regular maintenance on their vehicles. Its all in the automobile manufactures manuals- the owner’s manual and service manual. On top of that when you do go shopping for a new car, truck, van or S.U.V. your car will be more desirable as well as worth more cash as a trade in.

The Key For Changing A Tire Is Preparation

There really isn’t all that much to it, yet some people still find themselves trapped by the side of the road because they don’t know how to change a tire. It’s a relatively simple job that requires very few tools, almost anyone can do it and once you learn how to change a tire you won’t have to worry about hoping for the kindness of strangers to get you back on the road again.

The key really lies in the preparation: make sure, at the minimum, your car is prepared with the following:

Either a full size inflated spare tire or a temporary spare tire.

A jack that fits your car and your owner’s manual to tell you the proper placement of the jack to avoid damaging the frame of your car.

A lug wrench to loosen and tighten the lug nuts.

And last but not least – a tire gauge.

Things like a pump, in case your spare has gone flat or some WD-40 or other penetrating oil (for lug nuts that are difficult to break) can be good additions to your tire changing tool repertoire, but usually aren’t as necessary as the above mentioned items.

Now we’ll get into the specifics of learning how to change a tire. First things first, you’ll need to pull off of the road (preferably to a flat, level surface). Turn off the engine, put your car in park and apply the emergency break. If you’re on the shoulder or side of the road, still in proximity to the flow of traffic, you’ll want to put on your hazard lights.

Get your jack, the wrench, the spare tire and your owner’s manual and make your way over to the flat. You may or may not have to remove a hub cap depending upon the wheel of your car, if you do the lug wrench usually has a flat blade opposite the head to pry away the cap.

While the car is still on the ground, begin to loosen the lug nuts by turning the wrench to the left, or counter clockwise. Unscrew the nuts until they are each loose enough to move by hand, but not quite until they are all the way off.

Check your manual again to ensure proper placement of your jack and follow instructions for jacking the car high enough to give yourself room to work when removing and replacing the tire.

Once the car is off the ground you can completely unscrew the lug nuts, I usually like to put them inside of the removed hub cap to ensure that I’ll remember where they are when I need them again.

Take off your flat and replace it with your full size or temporary spare, then go to the removed hub cap and retrieve your lug nuts. Don’t tighten any one lug nut all the way before addressing all of them; tighten them each a little bit at a time to ensure the tire is going on evenly. Once all of the lug nuts are relatively tight, the car can be lowered back to the ground – attempting to tighten them with absolutely all of your might while the car is still in the air can cause the jack to tip and result in serious injury.

Once the car is safely back on the ground, you can work on securing the tire completely by putting some elbow grease into tightening the nuts again.

If your psi (found by using you air pressure gauge) is lower than what is recommended (printed on the side of the tire), you can stop by a gas station, convenience store or anywhere with an air pump to fill it to the appropriate level.

Now that you know how to change a tire, and know what you need to be prepared to do it, you can feel comfortable that you won’t be inconvenienced that much or kept off the road for too long should the situation arise.
